Ubuntu plans to shut down the Canonical Partner repository ahead of the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release in April.

The Canonical Partner repository is where software vendors provide proprietary applications for easy installation by Ubuntu users. The problem is that the library has been empty since Ubuntu 20.10. Adobe Flash (now out of date) was the only thing that repo provided for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, but that will also be gone in 22.04 LTS.

Therefore, Ubuntu developer Steve Langasek recommends deprecating the Canonical partner profile. He noted on the mailing list:

> > The Snap Store has matured and I believe it replaces the partner archive, and we should delete this no longer used archive from Ubuntu systems and prune the remnants. > > > This needs to be modified in multiple places in Ubuntu (livecd-rootfs, subiquity, ubiquity, curtin, cloud-init, python-apt) to remove the > > > References to archive.cc, and modifications to the ubuntu-release upgrader to clean up apt resources on upgrades between releases. These can all be done in one release cycle. > > > I’ve consulted within Canonical on the plan and have heard no opposition. While it’s unlikely anyone in the community would disagree with this scrapping plan if Canonical isn’t going to release anything to it :), we wanted to be transparent and at least let everyone know that this change is coming. > > >
